About the Club

Bishop Monkton Croquet Club was founded in 2008 by a group of enthusiastic villagers and now has about 60 members from Bishop Monkton, Ripon, Harrogate, Knaresborough and surrounding villages. It is one of the largest clubs in Yorkshire and, arguably, one of the best with excellent facilities including a clubhouse and two excellent lawns.

Play is available every day of the week from mid-April to mid-October subject to the needs of organised matches and lawn maintenance. There are five organised club afternoons and two club evenings every week, to which all members are welcome to turn up and play.

There is a full programme of friendly matches with other clubs, competition play in the Yorkshire and Cross-Pennine Leagues, internal club competitions and a full calendar of social events.

Members can also book the lawns subject to availability.

Organised Sessions

We organise club afternoons during the playing season (April to October) as follows:

Monday: 2:00pm to 4:00pm followed by tea and biscuits in the Village Hall

Thursday: 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Friday: 2:00pm to 4:00pm followed by tea and biscuits in the Village Hall

Saturday: 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Sunday: 2:00pm – 5:00pm

On all these club afternoons members are welcome to turn up and play without booking in advance.  We usually play a series of doubles games with everyone included and pairings changing for each game.  All abilities are welcome to come and join in.

Club evenings

We organise club evenings as follows:

Tuesday: 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Wednesday: 6:00 – 8:00pm

Again, all members are welcome to turn up and play without booking in advance.

Coaching sessions

We organise coaching sessions most Thursday lunchtimes during the playing season.  Two or three of our experienced players are happy for members of all abilities to come along between 12:00noon and 1:00pm to develop their play.  Whether it be the basics for beginners or specifics around strategy, everyone is welcome.  There is a WhatsApp group for everyone interested in these sessions to enable communication about when they are happening and who is planning to attend.

Social Events

The following social events will be taking place during the 2025 playing season:

  • Pimm's afternoons - Thursday 26th June and Thursday 28th August
  • Afternoon teas - Thursday 22nd May and Thursday 31st August
  • End of season annual supper - Friday 26th September
