Despite the occasional downpour, villagers turned out in force on Spring Bank Holiday Monday for the much-loved Family Fun Day, transforming the centre of the village into a hive of activity and community spirit.

Families were treated to an afternoon of entertainment, including two lively duck races along the beck, widely considered the main attraction, alongside multiple pig races, a cheerful boat race, and a tug of war, which ended with children making a splash in the beck itself.

Youngsters had plenty to enjoy, with a bouncy castle, face painting, and the chance to explore a real ambulance, offering fun and learning in equal measure. Meanwhile, a range of stalls featuring local businesses lined the route, one of which sold delicious local honey. Jennyruth Workshop, a registered charity and social enterprise based in Ripon for adults with learning disabilities, was also well represented.

The beck-side festivities were well-fuelled by a bustling hog roast, which saw an impressively long queue on opening, while liquid refreshments came from the Mason's Arms bar. The perennially popular ice cream van was also in attendance.

Indoors, the primary school was packed with visitors enjoying tea and cakes, others browsing displays including an exhibition on the Best Years of Our Lives, staged by the Local History Group. A team from VAMOS, a charity supporting children in poorer communities, also ran a well-supported raffle to raise awareness and funds for their ongoing work.

While the weather proved unpredictable, the turnout was strong throughout the day, and the sense of community undampened. The event was organised by a dedicated team of volunteers, whose efforts deserve warm thanks for pulling together such an enjoyable and memorable village day.
