When our website photographer was out and about around the village last week she spotted a subject for a photograph that perfectly showcased Bishop Monkton as a truly rural village. She came across two riders and their horses along Boroughbridge Road and snapped the image, asking permission, of course, to include it on the website.

The two riders were happy to agree and trotted away. They subsequently turned back and asked if the website could politely remind people of the Highway Code regarding the safety of horses and riders. They were quick to stress that most people are polite and considerate but, on the morning the photo was taken, they had experienced “the other side of the coin” from one lady driver.

The website is happy to comply;

The Highway Code advises that, when passing horses on the road, drivers should slow down to a maximum of 10 m.p.h. and allow at least two meters of space. Drivers should be patient, avoid sounding their horn or revving their engine, especially when overtaking, pass wide and slow and be patient avoiding sudden movements, loud noises, or anything that could startle the horse.

If it is not safe to pass with the required distance and speed, wait behind the horse until it is safe to do so.

A simple matter of courtesy, care and consideration keeping the roads safe for everyone.
