Did you know about the beautifully restored, Grade II listed, Georgian brick and stone gazebo with a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside hidden away in Blossomgate in Ripon and used as a banqueting house by its original owners? Ever wanted to try your hand at bell ringing or learn more about Ripon's rich industrial heritage?

Now is your chance to find out more. From September 12th until September 21st , the city of Ripon is taking part in Heritage Open Days, England's largest annual celebration of history, community and culture, co-ordinated by the National Trust, with thousands of events planned across the country.

Ripon's Heritage Days are supported by Ripon BID, an independent, not-for-profit, business-led initiative to promote the city and raise its profile. Residents and visitors will be able to take part in exclusive guided tours of historic buildings, normally closed to the public, attend fascinating heritage talks from local experts and try hands-on experiences, all guaranteed to bring the city's rich history to life.

Participants can visit Ripon & District Light Railway on Canal Side in Dallamires Lane, a narrow gauge preservation project, situated on the 1847 proposed site for a station on the Leeds & Thirsk Railway, where some of the original machinery still remains. The Mayor's Parlour at Ripon Town Hall will be open with tours led by the City's Bellman and there will be an opportunity to visit the current renovation work in progress at the Spa Baths with its wonderful art nouveau tiling. A building that was opened by Queen Victoria's daughter, Beatrice, in 1905. Members of Ripon Civic Society will lead a walk around the city, focussing on “looking up” and explain why St. Wilfrid is seen taking a bath in public. There will be a talk on the First Marquess of Ripon, a former Viceroy of India, who lived at nearby Studley Royal. A descendent of Oliver Cromwell, the Marquis had the distinction of being born at No 10, Downing Street.

There will also be three exclusive drone videos shown during the festival. These stunning aerial films will showcase Ripon’s iconic landmarks and breathtaking landscapes, offering a fresh perspective on the city’s remarkable heritage.

Details of where and when and much more, including the chance of bell ringing at St. John's Church, Sharrow, can be found by downloading the leaflet, please click here.

All events are free, some are simply just turn up, others do have to be booked. Check the leaflet for full details.
