You don't have to be a runner to get involved and fully enjoy the spirit of the day.

Will records tumble again at the eighth annual BeckBusters Race to be held on Sunday September 21st, now a regular date in the village's calendar.

Last year's race saw the record for the 10 km race fall by 1 minute 46 seconds, while the winner in the children's 2 km race ran the course four seconds faster than previously registered.

Starting and finishing at Bishop Monkton School, and organised by the Friends of Bishop Monkton School (FOBMS), this event always brings a party atmosphere to the village as friends, families, team-mates, villagers, sponsors and passers-by gather along the route to clap and cheer the runners on their way. On the school playing field there will be plenty happening to keep spectators, as well as post race runners, fed, (bacon sarnies anyone) watered and entertained, not to mention a home made cake stall, which a visitor to last year's event ranked as one of the best in Yorkshire. There will also be a well stocked tombola.

The 2 km run is a fun run for children under 15 and starts at 10 a.m. with prizes awarded to overall and age category winners. The entry fee is £5. The youngest entrant last year was aged just two.

The 10 km race, starting at 11 a.m., is a chip timed event over a multi-terrain course, quickly gaining a reputation for being flat and fast. The course incorporates a mixture of road, footpaths and trails following the River Ure and Ripon Canal onto Littlethorpe before heading back cross country to Bishop Monkton, with the famous “splash through the beck” as a finale.

Entry fees for the 10 km race vary from £18-£22. The course limit is 300 and entries are not allowed on the day. For a list of runners, either individual or from clubs, check the RaceBest website by clicking here. Full details and how to enter both races can be found by clicking here.

FOBMS appreciates the support received from not just villagers, but also the wider community and is once again appealing for race marshals, the unsung heroes of the day, who ensure the smooth running of the race itself. A free cuppa and bacon sandwich is on offer to anyone willing to help for a couple of hours. Click here to email for more information.

Vic Porter, Chair of FOBMS, said, “We are really looking forward to the BeckBusters event. It’s always such a lovely day and I always look forward to seeing the school and village community coming together. This year we are looking to raise funds to replace the last of the laptops, some of which are at least 14 years old. As always we would like to thank the village for their continued support”.

Last year's event raised a total of £5,917.
