There can't be many villagers who would dispute that Bishop Monkton is a very pretty and pleasant place in which to while away time- a thriving community set amongst a countryside dotted with field and trees.

Residents obviously take a pride in their surroundings, but just recently a couple of villagers have done that little bit extra, by getting two of the planters in the village “summer ready”.

Thanks must go to Adrian “Gunner” Mardon, who has tidied up the planter by the village sign on Moor Road and Eliott Campey, who has replanted the one by the beck near the ford. Already looking lovely, they will be much appreciated.

Eliott moved to the village from Harrogate about six weeks ago and is keen to get involved with village life. “Everyone is so friendly and we love living here already. We are so lucky” said Eliott.

He noticed the somewhat dishevelled planter, showcasing, in prime position, a rather large nettle, during one of his walks around the village with his partner Jake and their Schnauzer dog, Hovis. After checking with the Yorkshire Countrywomens' Association, who initially provided the pot, he replanted it with colourful summer bedding, some of which was supplied by the YCWA, bringing much pleasure to villagers and visitors alike. Near neighbours have offered to help with any necessary watering.

Approaching the village from the A61 the village sign in its summer guise, centre bush neatly trimmed, is now an attractive welcome to the village, courtesy of “Gunner”. He says “I decided the display of plants needed an overhaul and added a couple of pots with some trailing bright purple aubretia to the sides” . He has certainly done a good job.

The last word probably best belongs to long time and well known resident, Angie Archbold, who remarked “I always say it's the people of our village that make it special “.
