Driving into the village down Moor Road no-one can fail to notice that there has been a slight change in the appearance of the village sign. Now patriotically decorated in red white and blue and including the iconic poppy, it gives everyone cause to pause, reflect and remember exactly what the country is commemorating this week as the 80th anniversary of VE Day approaches.

Villager, Adrian 'Gunner' Mardon, who served 24 years in the Household Calvary is honoured to put his name to the dressing of the sign.

'Gunner' says proudly “The military has, and always will be, very important to me and my family, who have served and protected this country as far back as I can see. I’ve lost a lot of friends and comrades from the ravages of war, whether that be from active duty or mental health from their experiences. Until my last breath I will tell their stories”.

We will, and must, always remember them.
