Thank you to Colin Philpott for sending in this report.

More than forty villagers enjoyed an interesting talk in the Village Hall on Wednesday evening about the history of Nidderdale.

Rowena Moir, who works as a volunteer for the National Trust, explained how the idyllic and picturesque dale we know today had a very different character in the past.

She explored the industrial history of the area including its former lead mines and its many mills. She also described the coming of the railway to Nidderdale and the building of its three reservoirs. She spoke about the temporary village built for workers during the construction of the Scar House Reservoir.

The talk was organised by the Bishop Monkton Local History Group.
